Hershey's and 'e-code'

I have been informed by Hershey's that they clearly specify each and every ingredients on the label. They are not aware of 'e-code'. If it isn't listed on the label, then it won't be in the chocolate. If there is gelatin listed, then it could be from an animal source. Once again, it was reiterated that all the ingredients are listed on the label. And Allah (SWT) Knows Best. For more information, visit http://www.hersheys.com and/or call them at 1-800-468-1714.

WRIGLEY'S Gum

Your e-mail sent to the head office of Wrigley in Chicago was forwarded to our office in Toronto to respond. Thank you for your question regarding the use of glycerin in our WRIGLEY'S brands.

We have recently made changes to our production so that the glycerin used in the manufacture of all our gum products is from vegetable sources only. Prior to that, the glycerin used was derived from an animal source, vegetable, synthetic, or a combination of all. The availability of pure vegetable-derived glycerin decreased over a period of several years, which is why we had to rely on sources where the use of animal products was uncertain.

Now that the glycerin is from vegetable sources we are happy to say that our gum is now available to vegetarians and those with ethnic dietary restrictions.

There is one exception to this, and that is Extra Polar Ice chewing gum. It has gelatin in it (which is derived from animals and is listed on the ingredients). We have been unable to find a distributor of non-animal derived gelatin at this time. This brand is not to be confused with Excel Polar Ice, which does not contain gelatin.

Another common question concerns whether glycerin is an alcohol or not. Glycerin is an alcohol but this type of alcohol is a natural byproduct of most plants, fruits and vegetables or it sometimes has a synthetic source. We would like to point out that this alcohol is NOT the same as the ethyl alcohol found in alcoholic beverages.

We appreciate your getting in touch with us and thank you for your interest in the Wrigley Company.

Yours very truly,

Bryan D. Challis Consumer Affairs Co-ordinator WRIGLEY Canada

Wrigley Chewing Gums

I have been informed by Wrigley Canada that all Wrigley gums are free of ADIs. However, Polar Ice is the only exception, as it contains ADIs.
